LUCY FOR PRESIDENT – Lucy’s 143rd Birthday Party

That’s right…. you heard it here first!    Lucy the Elephant is running for president, and don’t assume she’s republican simply because she’s an elephant.  Lucy is in a party all her own, and YOU are invited to celebrate Lucy’s 143rd BIRTHDAY PARTY when the official announcement is made on Saturday,Lucy-2024-Bday-Poster July 20, 2024 from 10am-8pm. Join us for a fun-filled day of food, rides, activities, and much more!

This year we will see the return of our Miniature 9-Hole Golf Course, a favorite for many years now. Party-goers will also remember our Money Booth from last year’s party where you can raise some campaign money by catching as much Lucy Bucks as you can — and possibly even win one of our special prizes included on every turn!  Beat the heat (and the other candidates) on our 22-foot waterslide that will send you soaring in the pools. Purchase one of our “Lucy for President” Collectible Birthday Tees and make-your-own button pin to complete your look for the campaign trail.  You can even cast your vote for president — we have a feeling Lucy will win!

Since it IS a birthday party, we’ll be singing Happy Birthday to our dear Lucy at 3:00PM when you can get a slice of the birthday cake to enjoy (while supplies last)!

Due to the unprecedented health issue facing America and indeed the World, Lucy the Elephant & Gift Shop will not open this weekend, March 21 & 22 or next weekend, March 28 and 29. While there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Atlantic County as of today and crowds would unlikely exceed 50 people at Lucy, we have decided to follow the directive of Governor Murphy and remain closed.

As of now, it is our intention to resume operation on Wednesday, April 1st. This may however change as conditions warrant. Follow the guidelines set forth by our health officials and practice social distancing. We are Jersey Strong…we got thru Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and we will get through this TOGETHER. LUCY THE ELEPHANT: NOW LISTED ONLY ON AIRBNB

Okay, all you Lucy lovers out there!!!  Pack your trunk (…err, your bags)!

The Save Lucy Committee is excited to announce that THREE lucky Airbnb guests and their friends will have the chance to stay inside Lucy the Elephant, one of the first and only National Historic Landmarks now on Airbnb.

Starting on March 5th, longtime Lucy fans — or anyone who has had the Jersey Shore on their travel bucket list — can book a stay inside Lucy’s storied walls.  Scheduled to take place on March 17th, 18th or 19th, each of the three one-night overnight stays is priced at $138, in honor of the number of years Lucy has served as a New Jersey Shore icon.

Standing a regal six stories high, Lucy the Elephant was built in 1881 and is older than the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.  She hosted her first stay in 1902, and over the years she has served as a tavern and even hosted former United States President Woodrow Wilson.

During their Airbnb stay, guests will be transported back in time to when Lucy served as a summer vacation home in the early 20th century, fully decorated in Victorian style to resemble how Lucy’s interior may have looked at that time.  Shortly after her brief stint as a residence is when Lucy was first opened as a tourist attraction where visitors could tour the furnished interior of “the Elephant House” for only 10 cents.

To celebrate this historic stay, Airbnb will make a donation to the Save Lucy Committee, supporting efforts to keep Lucy the Elephant standing “Jersey strong” for future generations to enjoy!

If you want to stay inside a piece of history that continues to invigorate the Jersey Shore, you can request to book* this experience. Reservations open March 5th at 12:00PM EST on airbnb.com/lucy.

*The three individual one-night stays at Lucy The Elephant is not a contest.

LUCY PASSES ON PETA

The Board of Trustees of Lucy the Elephant has decided to pass on a donation offer made by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Late last week, PETA reached out to Lucy offering to make a donation toward the current construction/painting project at the National Historic Landmark in exchange for allowing the iconic elephant to be used as a vehicle to promote awareness of the treatment of circus elephants. In their request, which was released to the media before reaching Lucy CEO, Richard Helfant, PETA asked to hang a banner on the Jersey Shore landmark with the same inscription as the elephant statue on display at their Washington, DC offices. Further, PETA wanted to attach a foam shackle to one of Lucy’s legs along with a teardrop below one of her eyes. The latter was of grave concern to Helfant who stated, “Lucy is a happy place. We must always insure that children who visit Lucy have a happy experience and leave with smiles on their faces. Anything that could sadden a child is not acceptable here at Lucy”. He added, “While every donation is important to an almost completely self-funded non-profit organization, this one comes with too many conditions. Lucy is a National Historic Landmark whose mission is historic preservation. We must be diligent in maintaining her stature as an NHL”.

PETA’S pre-mature release of their offer to Lucy lead the media and others to believe they were offering to fund the entire project. Helfant acknowledged this was not the case as the animal rights organization offered $2000 in exchange for using Lucy to help further their cause. Save Lucy Committee board member, Robert McGuigan, stated “Cruelty to animals is abhorrent, but given the divisive nature of some of PETA’s campaigns, Lucy is much better off seeking ‘no strings attached’ donations”.

The on-going project at Lucy includes replacement of the howdah (riding carriage) railings, as well as rust removal and painting of the entire 90 ton, 65-foot tall structure. The paint contractor, Alpine Painting & Sandblasting of Paterson, NJ, convinced Benjamin Moore & Co. to donate the 100 gallons of paint needed. The cost of the entire project is estimated to be $58,000. The 1772 Foundation, administered by the New Jersey Historic Trust, awarded Lucy an $11,000 grant toward the project. Still, a balance in excess of $35,000 must be raised to pay for the work, already underway.

The Save Lucy Committee has created a commemorative “I Helped Paint Lucy” T-shirt which is available for sale in Lucy’s gift shop and on her website; www.LucyTheElephant.org. The shirt features Lucy with her trunk in the air happily spraying paint in all the colors of the rainbow. The shirt sells for $20. People can also make a monetary donation with a credit card on Lucy’s website. All donations are tax deductible.

To do our part in protecting the species, Lucy’s Board of Trustees has decided that a portion of any funds collected above and beyond the cost of this project will be donated to elephant sanctuaries in Florida and Tennessee.

Lucy is currently open every day; Weekdays from 11am to 4pm and weekends from 10am to 5pm. “Like” Lucy on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram too.
