School Field Trips to Lucy the Elephant
Attention all schools and educational groups! Lucy the Elephant is rolling out the welcome mat for you and your classes to come explore one of the most unique National Historic Landmarks in the United States! Lucy the Elephant was built in 1881, making her almost 140 years and the OLDEST Roadside Attraction in America. Located on the beach in Margate City, New Jersey, Lucy the Elephant is the perfect backdrop to learn about a variety of topics that include: oceanic habitats and ecosystems, art and zoomorphic architecture (a type of novelty architecture), historic preservation, development of the railroad system and New Jersey seaside resorts in the 19th century, travel and tourism, . . . the possibilities are limitless.
Since her “birth”, Lucy the Elephant has been used for many purposes such as as a real estate office, a tavern, and even a summer home! For most of her existence, though, Lucy has been a tourist attraction hosting famous guests from around the world that include former President Woodrow Wilson, industrialist Henry Ford, the du Pont family of Delaware, and many more! Today, children of all ages come to explore the insides of this great elephant, and now we’ve made it even more affordable for schools to introduce their students to Lucy. For all school-sponsored trips, the Save Lucy Committee is proud to offer one (1) FREE adult ticket with every eight (8) student tickets purchased at regular price that can be used for the teachers and chaperones accompanying the trip.
So, this year when planning your school field trip, consider Lucy the Elephant. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, all donations and admission ticket sales help fund operations and the continued restoration of Lucy the Elephant. It’s just one of the many ways you and your class can help preserve one of America’s National Historic Landmarks.
